| Neglectful homeowner needs to see the blight
DEAR HARRIETTE: My neighbor lives and works in the city but keeps the residence next to our house for whatever reasons. My problem is that he doesn't take care of his lawn and hedges. It looks like an abandoned house, and we live in a community that's being transformed by gentrification. My wife and I take pride in our home, but the place next door is such an eyesore that its ugliness trumps any beauty we attempt to add to our home. He only comes by late at night on weekends. Would it be terribly rude to wait up for him to chat about his lawn maintenance? No mail is delivered to the address - if I could write him a letter, I would. Earl, Pennsauken, N.J. Dear Earl: Good news. You can send him a letter. If you address a heartfelt note to your neighbor stating your concerns without anger but through a sincere plea to improve your neighborhood, he will get it and may receive it positively.
Cemetery rapist jailed
Comparing him to a vulture pouncing on a mouse, a Calgary judge today sentenced a man who raped his victim in a cemetery to 3 1/2 years in prison. He has sexual intercourse with her ... without her consent, in of all places a cemetery, Justice John Rooke said of Stefano Priolo. Which shows the indignity he has towards her and the people buried in the cemetery. Rooke, who convicted Priolo, 30, last week of sexually assaulting his then-18-year-old victim, noted he took advantage of a stupid and naive young woman. Its the stupid people that need protection, he said, in finding a serious sentence was warranted. .

The world in 2008: a year and an era
China might well be in the process of poisoning itself. But environmental contamination does not respect borders. Mariano Aguirre A region of dangers As 2007 neared its end, “Annapolis" emerged as the hopeful myth about the middle east: the perfect setting for the latest cycle of peace-hopes (and in the end failure) that the establishment media likes. The fact that the United States secretary of state Condoleezza Rice is leading the effort also satisfies the true believers that Washington alone must lead the region to peace. But after the nice words, the millions of euros already expended and the others promised by the donor community to reconstruct what Israel has destroyed in Palestine, comes the harsh reality: Israel is continuing its settlement policy in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, thus undermining the basis of any possible agreement in the next twelve months.
The rise and rise of the Manics
The Manic Street Preachers took home the Godlike Genius trophy at Thursday night's NME awards. While the Welsh rock band set out to be the voice of the working classes, the height of their success coincided with the rise of Britpop and they have become a highly acclaimed alternative rock band famous for many much-loved anthems. We take a look at the development of the Manics' 'Godlike genius'. :: Starting Out The Manic Street Preachers formed as a punk band at school in South Wales in 1986 with James Dean Bradfield as frontman, his cousin Sean Moore as drummer and Nicky Wire on bass guitar. Guitarist Richey Edwards joined in 1989. Richey and Nicky wrote the lyrics and James and Sean the music. In 1991 Richey gained the band notoriety when NME journalist Steve Lamacq challenged their punk values after a gig at the Norwich Arts Centre.
N.Y.'s Miss Americas made history
Three Miss New York contestants have been crowned Miss America, and in the process, two of them made history. The 1945 Miss America was Bess Myerson, the first Jewish winner, and Vanessa Williams became the first black winner in 1984. They, and Miss New York Tawny Godin, who became Miss America 1976, worked professionally in entertainment and the media. This week, Elisabeth Baldanza, 24, of East Meredith, competes as Miss New York in the national pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Preliminary contests are during the week, and the finale will be telecast at 8 p.m. Saturday on The Learning Channel _ channel 58 in the Oneonta area. Baldanza was crowned Miss New York in July. She competed in the state competition after winning the Miss Empire Rose title in Albany County.
The new yogurt culture
The common thread is that unlike the artificial, sugary frozen yogurt that was popular in the 1980s and '90s, this version tastes remarkably like tart, plain yogurt. And while a few shops offer other flavors like chocolate or green tea, most opt for the plain and add toppings like fresh fruit or granola. "It's seriously addicting," says 26-year-old Lena Hubrig, in line one recent afternoon at Yogurt Bar. "The first time I tried it, I was totally unprepared for the tang, and I couldn't decide if I actually liked it. Then about five minutes went by, and I realized my spoon was scraping the bottom of the cup. Uhhh, guess I liked it." Hardly a day goes by now that Hubrig doesn't need her fix. "I consider it a healthier option than the afternoon snacks I used to eat, like chips or cookies, so I feel virtuous when I eat it." .
Louisville craigslist sting nabs 27 for prostitution charges
What inconceivable reality are you living in? There have NEVER been as many firearms---handguns, assault rifles, etc.--in the hands of middle America than there are now. Are we safer---NO. Winehouse to fight cannabis conviction
The singer-songwriter, who was nominated for six Grammy awards earlier this month, was arrested with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil on October 18 at the five-star Radisson SAS Hotel. The couple and another man were held in cells overnight but were released after admitting possessing 1/4 ounce (7g) of the drug. Bergen police spokeswoman Liv Karlsen said: "I can confirm that she must appear in court. "If one appeals a conviction, it's the rule that one has to appear in person, so this is not surprising." Winehouse has claimed she did not know what she had put her signature to and had been tricked. Bergen Police said she was given full translation assistance. Fielder-Civil, 25, is in jail awaiting trial for perverting the course of justice.
Amy Winehouse pwns the Grammys
Amy Winehouse scored five Grammys last night: Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "Rehab," Best Vocal Album and Best Pop Vocal Performance. She accepted the award live via satellite from London. Her visa request was denied but then accepted at the last minute. Amy chose to perform closer to home. Us Magazine reports: After accepting her award, an emotional Winehouse, who was joined on stage by her dad and mom, thanked her parents, record label and "incarcerated Blake" — her husband, who has been behind bars since last last year. "I can't believe I've won 5 awards. It's a shame I couldn't be there to accept the awards but I'm so proud and happy that I had the opportunity to perform for the Grammys in my hometown of London with my family and friends around me," she said.
