| Cosmo says: Apple store is the best place to meet men
Hey, I'm no relationship guru (I write about tech, for goodness' sake). So when my single friends ask me about the best places to meet men in San Francisco, I draw a blank. As much as I'd like to help them meet a Silicon Valley man-which is what they're really after-I can't, because I don't know many single men or where they hang out. I'm married, and my friends know that. But I guess deep down they hope I can introduce them to a few geek friends, because you know, I'm in the "tech field." If I didn't know better, I'd tell them to just go online, since that's where the guy geeks are. But a Cosmopolitan article says the best place to meet guys is at the Apple store. Yes, the Apple store! Who would've thought? Those experts in sex, love, and dating say most guys are natural gadget lovers, and the vibe at the Apple store is "conducive to man meeting." The article goes on to suggest single women should enroll in a free workshop, check their email while at the store, or just stop by to survey the store's "good-looking merchandise." I guess this puts male "Geniuses" at a great advantage.
Mr. Right or no, it may be time to make yourself at home
Dating experts believe women who can afford to buy a home on their own shouldn't postpone a purchase until they find true love. But they allow that a fair number of women, including many traditionalists, would rather wait until they're hitched - or at least engaged - before they make a property purchase. "Some women hold back. To them, it doesn't seem natural to buy a house and settle down until after the man they love proposes. They're old-fashioned in that way," says Ellen Fein, co-author with Sherrie Schneider of "The Rules" books, a series of widely read primers on the art of capturing love and staying happily married (www.therulesbook.com). Fein and Schneider say women should hold out for true love and never gold-dig. Even so, they allow that some women - especially those living in high housing-cost areas - simply can't afford to buy a home on a single salary.
Gay matchmaking sites find a growing market
Growing up, Bethtina Woodridge heard all kinds of advice about dating, finding a husband and getting married. "You don't have those tips about meeting women," said Woodridge, 31. "How do I approach her, how do I know she is gay?" For Woodridge, finding that special someone turned out to be easier online. Several months after signing up for dating service Chemistry.com, Woodridge was matched with her partner, who was "incredibly honest and sincere, and she stole my heart." After online giant eHarmony made headlines last year by saying its psychological research is based exclusively on heterosexual relationships, a growing number of rival online matchmakers are using their algorithms to find same-sex love as well. "There are just not enough services for creating healthy relationships, and (it is) a major gap in the gay community," said matchmaker Patrick Perrine, founder of San Francisco-based Mypartner.com, which caters to "sophisticated, cultured and relationship-oriented gay men" and has more than 50,000 clients across the nation.
What women want in a lover
Coupled with this he should have a "wacky" sense of humour, according to the study of 40,000 women by UKdating.com. But Australian men might find the sexual side a little harder to adhere to. He needs to be experienced - having had more than three relationships, but not too experienced - having had no more than six sexual partners, has never been married and doesn't have children. The precise check-list has been compiled from preferences entered by members of the dating website. Also important is a university education, with many women specifying that they would like to meet a man with a BA degree. Smokers and football fans were given the thumbs-down. Only 1 per cent of women questioned would date a chap who hates pets. Fortunately for imperfect men, however, not all women go for the Gyllenhaal ideal.
Inqlings: Will Luke Wilson get any attention?
The women of Bryn Mawr College will have Luke Wilson in their midst in late April and early May. Wilson, the Legally Blonde star and Frat Packer, will be on campus to film Tenure, a comedy about a college prof. Bryn Mawr nudged out Haverford College, which also had been heavily scouted. Bryn Mawr spokesman Matt Gray expects few distractions at the all-woman school. "They'll be busy with finals at that point," he says. Philly's Heery Casting is looking for identical-twin men, ages 18 to 22 with no acting experience necessary, for roles. (They must be actual identical twins.) E-mail a picture, with contact info, to tenuremovie@gmail.com. Wilson's older brother Owen will visit Bucks County and thereabouts in May to shoot scenes with Jennifer Aniston for Marley & Me.
Whakatane man to face trial on 12 charges
A prominent Whakatane man accused of domestic assaults on a woman and children will face a district court jury trial later this year on more than a dozen charges. A prima facie case was conceded at a depositions hearing in Tauranga today on 13 counts to which the defendant has pleaded not guilty. No pleas have been entered yet on three summary jurisdiction charges which were not subject to the committal proceedings. The man, who has had his name and occupation suppressed since he first appeared in Tauranga District Court last August, has been remanded on continued bail for callover on May 8. He is not allowed to associate with the complainants, whose identities are also suppressed. Community Magistrate Pat Ferguson said the question of lifting the interim suppression orders on the accused would be considered by a judge on the callover date.
A Comparison Between Gay And Heterosexual Couples Finds Equal Level Of ...
Same-sex couples are just as committed in their romantic relationships as heterosexual couples, say researchers who have studied the quality of adult relationships and healthy development. Their finding disputes the stereotype that couples in same-sex relationships are not as committed as their heterosexual counterparts and are therefore not as psychologically healthy. These results are from two studies featured in the January issue of Developmental Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association. This issue includes a special section that examines sexual orientation across the lifespan. Both studies compared same-sex couples with opposite-sex couples on a number of developmental and relationship factors. The first study examined whether committed same-sex couples differ from engaged and married opposite-sex couples in how well they interacted and how satisfied they were with their partners.
How to deploy to the cloud of your choice
Every cloud computing vendor I meet makes a point of telling me how long it takes the average enterprise these days to provision a new server (for the record, they tell me anything from 2 weeks to 3 months). Last week I met a vendor that made precisely the same point, but its solution isn't yet another compute cloud. CohesiveFT, whose Elastic Server On-Demand service launched in public beta last week, assembles virtual machines to order within minutes, and deploys them to the cloud of your choice — be it Amazon EC2 or your own implementation of VMWare, XenSource or Parallels (see screenshot, after the jump). The support for data center (and desktop) virtualization platforms is a sign that CFT (full name: Cohesive Flexible Technologies) doesn't believe that the world is about to consolidate its computing onto a small handful of giant compute clouds.
The story so far

Britney actually shows up
12, she called in sick for a court-ordered deposition, then arrived late at Mr Kaplan's office for the rescheduled hearing on January 3. That night, she was taken to a hospital after a stand-off in her home when she refused to return the children to Federline's bodyguard following a visit. Spears did not attend a court hearing on January 14 in which a court commissioner decided to keep in effect an order suspending her right to visit Jayden James, 1, and Sean Preston, 2. Spears went to the courthouse briefly but never went inside, and she left amid a swarm of paparazzi. She will get another chance on February 19 to persuade the court to restore her visitation rights. The Year-End Legal Landscape: Leaders, Losers, and Loopholes
Wow. What a year we've had. We saw the beginning of round two of the O.J. media circus, Anna Nicole's death turned into a kangaroo court, Britney and Paris slammed, Michael Vick went in the slammer, another Peterson missing wife mystery, the Duke lacrosse players were vindicated, their prosecutor went to jail and the Natalee Holloway story was deemed a cold case. I needed the holidays just to catch my breath, and gear up for the brewing legal stories of 2008. But before I sign off on 2007, I hope you'll indulge my musings. For example, what should I have told my 10-year-old daughter when she asked, "Mom, why is Anna Nicole Smith so famous … what did she do?" Ana's case regarding her husband's estate made it all the way to the Supreme Court, but that's not how she'll be remembered.
Lucas: Sampson guilty of mis-remembering past mistakes?
Sampson read from a prepared statement after Wednesday's loss to the Badgers, contending "I have never intentionally provided false or misleading information to the NCAA." Might just be another case of mis-remembering. Mike Lucas — 2/14/2008 7:22 am .
