| Reiser Prosecutor Saves Victim's Mom For Last
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The mother of Nina Reiser testified Monday that Nina was in love when she met and married Hans Reiser, who's now standing trial on charges he murdered her even though her body was never found. Taking the stand as the last prosecution witness in the lengthy trial of Hans Reiser, a 44-year-old computer engineer, Dr. Irina Sharanova said the couple met in March of 1998 at a cafe in Russia, where Nina was born and raised and was completing her medical studies and where Hans had business. Speaking through a Russian translator and occasionally shedding tears, Sharanova, who is raising the Reisers' two children at her home in St. Petersburg, Russia, said Nina was to serve as a translator for another Russian woman whom Hans Reiser had arranged to meet but he was more interested in Nina and they began dating.
A Prairie Home Companion: Altman's last ride
It's the end of the career of one of America's greatest filmmakers, with a strikingly diverse output that includes MASH (1970), Nashville (1975), The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993) and Gosford Park (2001). Lightly and in passing, A Prairie Home Companion situates Altman in the pantheon of great American popular artists, alongside Mark Twain, Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Chandler and Edward Hopper. All but Hopper hail from the midwest, like Altman. The film is based on another midwesterner, Garrison Keillor's, real life radio show, the original "A Prairie Home Companion", a retro mix of music and dry humour which still regularly plays to live audiences on stage at the same time as it goes out over the air-waves. In some ways the film is structured like another night of the long-running American show.

Spooner, Gudbranson top list of Ottawa-area draft prospects
With the exception of Shawn Lalonde, the first round of recent Ontario Hockey League drafts has been a virtual non-event for local hockey talent. Lalonde, who went ninth overall to Belleville in 2006 and has the NHL draft this June here in his hometown on his mind, is the only Ottawa-area player drafted in the first round by an OHL team since 2002 and one of only 13 locals dating back to 1997. All of that is going to change May 3 when the OHL teams hunker down in their respective war rooms and begin selecting the best players born in 1992. .
Emma's Date Rejection
So we got, like, way overexcited at pics of Emma Watson and Johnny Borrell together last week. But boo, hiss - the lady herself says that they's nothing in them. Talk about pouring ice-cold water on our romantic-minded fire. Emma was pictured with Razorlight rocker Johnny last week at the Vanity Fair and Burberry bash. It was just one of the many trendy engagements the actress has been snapped at of late, as she paves her way towards adulthood and even greater fame than before. Anyway, it might have been a case of our hearts running away with our minds, but we were convinced there could be some potential there between the sweet gal and the wild boy - aka Emma and Johnny. But, says the star, it just ain't true.
eHarmony.com sued for excluding homosexuals
LOS ANGELES, Calif. A Los Angeles woman has sued the popular online dating site eHarmony.com, claiming she was discriminated against based on her sexual orientation when the Web site refused to pair her with another woman. eHarmony was founded in 2000 by Neil Clark Warren, an evangelical with ties to Focus on the Family, and it has grown to more than 12 million registered users, according to Reuters. The lawyer for the woman, Linda Carlson, said the lawsuit was "about changing the landscape and making a statement out there that gay people, just like heterosexuals, have the right and desire to meet other people with whom they can fall in love." Carlson is urging fellow homosexuals to join the class action lawsuit geared toward forcing eHarmony to change its policy.
Spirit West Coast music festival is feast of personal ministry time
DEL MAR, Calif. Outside the glow of concert lights and beyond earshot of the main stage at Spirit West Coast, a small army of volunteers uses the lure of the music festival to minister to hundreds of music lovers from across California, Nevada and Arizona. It’s an aspect of the festival that Producer Jon Robberson finds especially rewarding. "Regardless of the music style, the message of Jesus and His love permeates the music at Spirit West Coast," the festival’s Web site boasts. "The message of faith in Christ is delivered in many other ways, always with the paramount purpose of impacting people with the gospel of Jesus Christ." This year, that message of faith will be delivered May 23 to 25 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Keynote speakers One of the ways Robberson and his crew encourage ministry is with the nightly lineup of speakers and comedians.
Happy birthday, 'leapers'
Stuart Watamaniuk turns two today, and already he can swim, ski, and converse fluidly. No, he's not a super baby, he's a leap year baby, or "leaper." The Edmonton Grade 3 student is one of approximately 22,800 leapers in Canada, or .07 per cent of the population. Moreover, he's a millennium leaper, which he knows makes him extra special. Most years, Stuart celebrates his birthday whenever it's most convenient for his family. .
Rodney Atkins' breakout album still going strong
Country singer Rodney Atkins was home with his family during the deadly tornadoes that swept across the state this month. If it hadn't been for a brief break in the tour he is on, Atkins would have been on the road with Brad Paisley, and Atkins' wife, Tammy Jo, son Elijah, 6, and teenage stepdaughters would have had to endure the chaos alone. The timing is just one of many things Atkins is thankful for these days, including the fact that the family escaped the strong winds largely unscathed. .
Government: Exhume Bhutto
Al-Qaeda linked militants denied being behind the killing of the 54-year-old former prime minister although the Government of nuclear-armed Pakistan, a key US ally in fighting terrorism, had said on Friday it had proof of their involvement. Ms Bhutto's party dismissed the Government account, saying there was no hard evidence and President Pervez Musharraf's embattled administration was trying to cover up its failure to protect her. In renewed violence, three Bhutto supporters were shot dead. The death toll stood at 44 since her assassination in a gun and bomb attack on Thursday. A close aide who prepared Ms Bhutto's body for burial dismissed as "ludicrous" a Government theory that she died after hitting her head on a sunroof during the suicide attack.
Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death
A number of them are two teacher families, and have an RV and boat parked in their driveway. The IEA is a UNION! While, there are many dedicated, excellent teachers, a lot only look at the bottom line, and are able to hold our children hostage until they get more salary and benefits. Arpie: I just got out my December 06 pay stub so I could tell you what last year looked like. At age 48, having taught since 1981, my gross pay was a little less than $46,000 last year. Subtract from that $7,000 in taxes, including social security: $6,000 for my familys health insurance, and $3,000 for my half of my retirement, and the total dwindles quickly as it does for anyone that is trying to support a family. I think I am pretty typical of most veteran teachers. Ill leave it to others to judge if its too much.
