| Police continue excavating Jersey hostel
Police are continuing their excavation of a bricked-up cellar at a Jersey youth hostel where they found a child's skull. Officers were alerted to the former children's home Haut de la Garenne after a child abuse investigation launched last November uncovered allegations dating back to the 1960s. Intelligence from the investigation led police to search the property, and on Saturday the remains of a child were discovered within the former Victorian school and orphanage in St Martin. A further six sites are to be looked at, including a number of hotspots at the cellar which were identified by a sniffer dog. All care agencies in Jersey are now being investigated for failing to act over allegations of child abuse. The island's deputy chief police officer Lenny Harper said: "We are looking at allegations that a number of agencies didn't deal with things as perhaps they should." The state's ex-health minister Senator Stuart Seyvret has accused the government of a cover-up.
Spirit Settles into Winter Spot, Opportunity Descends Deeper into ...
The story is far from over. The scientific data collected by Opportunity and Spirit will keep scientists on Earth busy for decades to come. And hope for Martian life, past or present, is not lost, not yet anyway. There are other locations still be studied onb Mars. Women Rule The MER mission, meanwhile, roves on and last Friday, February 22, the team made history in a new way. The entire tactical operations team for the mission, both onsite at JPL and offsite at the various remote institutions, was comprised of women, one of the premiere topics in Emily Lakdawalla's Planetary Society Weblog today. "It was fabulous," admitted Cindy Oda, mission manager. "You know the joke about women drivers. Well, we were joking the whole day that now women are driving on Mars, commanding rovers." Truth told, the guys couldn't help but tease them a little.
Win will bring more cooperation: Iemma
THE election of a Rudd Labor government offers an opportunity for better cooperation between the NSW and federal governments, Premier Morris Iemma said today. Labor Leader Kevin Rudd last night became Australia's 26th prime minister as voters across the nation swept John Howard from power and likely dumped him from his Sydney seat. The Labor Party achieved a 5.8 per cent national swing, sealing an ALP hold on every government across Australia. Labor needed 16 seats to claim an election victory for the first time since 1993, but it picked up 10 in Mr Rudd's home state of Queensland and another seven in NSW. Mr Iemma said Mr Rudd's emphatic win in NSW set the scene for greater cooperation between Canberra and the state government. The NSW government and Howard government were often at loggerheads, particularly over contentious GST funding that favoured states like Queensland and Western Australia over NSW and Victoria.
Letters, 1/29: Consider all options for Fair
The tragedy of those young and old lives cut short is no more significant than the daily loss of our young in the Middle East. And it’s half a century less poignant. The Jan. 21 pages made the whole story worthwhile in my mind, with the coverage of the terrible, lasting damage to Starkweather’s own loved ones. Somehow, these killers think their gruesome deeds will bring fame to themselves, make their enemies grieve and their loved ones rejoice. It isn’t so. If we can’t get some concept of the value of innocent life through the juvenile or demented mind of the prospective killer, maybe we can make it clear that they’ll never get the "fame" they seek. They’ll never attract rational admirers, and their own loved ones and admirers will not live happily ever after in the glow of the publicity.

John Mayer's Supreme and Sweaty Workout
John Mayer worked up quite a sweat at his Santa Monica gym on Tuesday afternoon before Sushi dinner at Katsuya. We know he's quite the fitness buff (emphasis on the buff — heeellooo), but has been without a female workout partner over the last few months. Since I'm sure that's something he wants from the highly desired future Mrs. Mayer, may I suggest that he sticks with his rumored flame Cameron Diaz. She seems to have the sense of humor to go with the physical fitness, which has to be a plus. .

But both of those came before Reekie arrived. He loves the shootouts, and Reekie figured he has won about 70 percent of the shootouts in his career."Shootouts are fun" Reekie said.
