Online Romeo admits to fraud

An Albuquerque, N.M., man accused of concocting an elaborate identity as a decorated veteran and gifted trauma surgeon to con a Fort Wayne woman has admitted to being a fraud.

In December, a federal grand jury indicted Douglas Martin, 58, on one count of making false statements and a second count of wire fraud. Martin pleaded guilty to the charges this week and will be sentenced in April. He faces up to 25 years in prison and more than $250,000 in fines.

The identity Martin created for himself, to steal money from a Fort Wayne woman he met through an online dating service, was impressive, at least on paper: multidisciplinary surgeon, military veteran decorated with such honors as the Navy Cross and the Legion of Merit, and graduate of the University of London.

Two weeks after Martin met the woman, he asked her to marry him and move to South Carolina.

Randy Moss Denies Domestic Violence Allegation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (CBS) ― A couple of days before the New England Patriots play the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship, Randy Moss is dealing with a serious allegation. A woman has filed a temporary restraining order against the Patriots' talented and controversial wide receiver in Florida for "protection against dating violence." A Florida radio station obtained a copy of the affidavit and is reporting that Broward County authorities have granted the woman the order. Moss is accused of committing a "battery upon a woman causing serious injury" and he allegedly "refused to allow her to seek medical attention." No criminal charges have been filed against Moss. He told reporters in the locker room at Gillette Stadium Wednesday that he did not hurt the woman and that she's trying to extort money from him.

Attraction coaches help mould Casanovas

Two years ago, Matt Tomporowski hit rock bottom. A serious relationship had just ended, and he couldn't envision getting back into the dating game. His search for help led to Ronald Lee. The “attraction coach" brought in a fashion consultant, taught Tomporowski about body language, and encouraged the heartsick 34-year-old to get out of his comfort zone.

“One day he actually videotaped me outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery on Robson, just approaching women," says the high-tech-industry employee, reached at his office. “I don't know how many women I talked to, but I had 10 phone numbers by the end of the day. It was a really fun experience. And I think the women enjoyed it too, being stopped by a classy, well-meaning, fun guy."

Lee's attraction-coaching firm, Man Meets Woman (www.manmeetswoman.com/ ), is just one local outfit in what could be a burgeoning industry.

Home and Away's Indiana Evans growing up fast

Although she's only 17 there's always speculation about who Evans is dating and, when it's rumoured to be someone from the Channel 7 soap opera, it's sure to make the internet.

But Evans says it didn't take long to figure out how to deal with the speculation surrounding her love life.

"It's really odd, it's bizarre when people you haven't met say things about you, but I don't go looking for it," she says.

"Being on Home and Away I have grown up a lot quicker than I would have if I wasn't on the show. But, then again, I don't have a life to compare it to because when I was starting out I was so much younger."

Evans' character Matilda Hunter also had some big issues to deal with last year when she broke up with on-screen boyfriend Ric Dalby, played by Mark Furze, after he had an affair with a married woman.

Man charged over 23-year old rape case after forensic breakthrough

A FORENSIC breakthrough has led to a 40-year-old Victorian man being charged over a rape that occurred more than 20 years ago.

Police have charged Paul Sayer with aggravated rape and aggravated burglary dating back to 1984. A then 19-year-old woman was raped in her bedroom in the early hours of October 23 by a man who broke into her home at Huntingdale in Melbourne's southeast. Another man stood in the doorway holding what appeared to be a rifle while the assault took place, police said. The woman's 21-year-old housemate was woken by the commotion, but hid when she saw the man holding a firearm. Both intruders escaped through the front door. The new evidence emerged during a review of historical unsolved sex crimes. Old forensic evidence was re-examined using technology unavailable 23 years ago.

Guilty pleas in old rape case in Greenwich

Stamford (AP)_ Two men charged with a rape dating back to 1991 in Greenwich after police made DNA matches have pleaded guilty in exchange for sentences of 10 years in prison.

Brian K. Higgins, 36, of New Haven, and Robert A. Barter, 37, of Greenwich, Tuesday pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping in connection with a 1991 rape of a then-19-year-old woman inside her apartment.

A prosecutor says Superior Court Judge John Kavanewsky Jr. accepted the pleas and agreed to sentence both men to 10 years in prison and 10 years of special probation including sex offender treatment, counseling, and other conditions.

The Connecticut State Police Crime Lab in Meriden in May linked Higgins to the crime and the next month police arrested Barter.

Dear Abby: Man plans to make proposal a family affair

DEAR ABBY: I have waited 36 years to marry. Most would say I was the quintessential bachelor. When I was younger, I never thought I'd date anyone with a child. I didn't want to deal with the "baggage" I thought came with dating a single mother.

Needless to say, I have been dating a delightful woman who has a 4-year-old son with whom I get along great. We've dated for a year and a half, I love her, and it's time I propose.

The three of us are a little team, and I'm wondering, when I ask her to marry me, should I involve her son and buy something for him - and if so, what? I was thinking of a custom-made charm for a chain (remember, he's only 4). I would like it to be something he can keep with him the rest of his life. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

eHarmony.com sued for excluding homosexuals

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A Los Angeles woman has sued the popular online dating site eHarmony.com, claiming she was discriminated against based on her sexual orientation when the Web site refused to pair her with another woman.

eHarmony was founded in 2000 by Neil Clark Warren, an evangelical with ties to Focus on the Family, and it has grown to more than 12 million registered users, according to Reuters.

The lawyer for the woman, Linda Carlson, said the lawsuit was "about changing the landscape and making a statement out there that gay people, just like heterosexuals, have the right and desire to meet other people with whom they can fall in love." Carlson is urging fellow homosexuals to join the class action lawsuit geared toward forcing eHarmony to change its policy.

Widow, 65, seduced out of $60,000 by online 'boyfriends'

A BRISBANE widow is on the verge of bankruptcy after being seduced out of $60,000 in successive online romance scams.

The 65-year-old first-time internet user was also new to dating when she went looking for love online last year.

After joining a meeting website for seniors, the woman was approached by a man claiming to be an English professor of physics who was building a robotic tractor.

The woman, who wants to be identified only as Shirley, quickly fell in love with "James" who over several months sent photos of himself, his children and his passport.

"I wanted to meet like-minded people," she said.

"We were supposed to be married this Christmas. He asked if I could assist him with his project and I didn't hesitate because we were a couple.

Qld woman charged over internet scam

POLICE have issued a warning against online scams after charging a 54-year-old Brisbane woman with receiving and forwarding stolen property.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, from the Queensland Police Service Computer Crimes Investigation Unit, said the woman allegedly asked to have stolen goods delivered to her home at Sunnybank, in Brisbane's south, before forwarding them to Cambodia. The woman was believed to have become involved in an internet relationship with a man in Cambodia whom she met on a dating website. Det Supt Hay said overseas-based criminals could spend months engaging people online to cultivate their trust before asking them to send money or goods. People who receive stolen or illegally obtained property and send it overseas would be prosecuted and internet users should be alert to possible scammers, he said.

Carrollton woman charged with plot on husband's life

A Carrollton woman arrested Thursday and charged with trying to hire someone to kill her estranged husband initially asked a man she was dating to do the job, court records show.

But Frisco police have not charged Vera Elizabeth Guthrie-Nail in connection with the death of her husband, who was fatally shot in his home the day after Christmas. The murder-for-hire plot for which she now faces a criminal solicitation of capital murder charge never moved forward.

Guthrie-Nail's boyfriend, who is a police witness and not being named for his protection, never took her offers seriously and thought she was "just talking crazy," according to the arrest warrant affidavit filed in her case.

The two stopped dating after four months in February. But when the man saw news reports that Craig Nail had been fatally shot inside his Frisco home, he decided to go to police.
