| The meeting of like moms
Women also are going online to find moms who match their personality and interests, much like singles use an online dating service."You scope 'em out," says Magalie Belanger, 31, about prospective mommy-friends in Helena, Mont. "You see how they deal with their children, and with yours."It's like dating, but the dates are with other moms and their children. While the kids play, hopefully without tantrums or biting, the moms are free to talk about the things they have in common, from the lofty subjects of religion and politics to the more practical topics of teething and diaper rash."Women, they want someone else who is going through the same thing," says Drury Sherrod, a Los Angeles social psychologist who studies friendship.Often, that can mean seeking out other women in the same trimester of pregnancy or whose children are similar in age, he says.Kate Harmon, 41, of Concord, Mass., recalls how 10 years ago she fell into the perfect support group while her husband was a graduate student in Boston.
Online social clubs prove beneficial to moms
The pickup lines are the same. But they're delivered with a mommy twist."Do you come here (the playground) often?""Do you want to come to my place, or shall we go to yours?"Mothers of young children, who a few years ago may have been looking for Mr. Right in a bar, now are seeking Mrs. Right and her kids in between the swings and the slides at the local playground.Women also are going online to find moms who match their personality and interests, much like singles use an online dating service."You scope 'em out," says Magalie Belanger, 31, about prospective mommy-friends in Helena, Mont. Large quake hits Papua New Guinea
A 6.7 MAGNITUDE earthquake hit Papua New Guinea's port city of Lae this evening, shaking items off shelves, bursting water tanks and plunging parts of the city into blackout. Australian Larry George, manager of the City Mission, said tonight it was a large quake that was felt for a long time. "It was a ripper, it emptied our shelves and smashed glasses." A water tank also burst and the power was cut, Mr George said. Lae often had small tremors but today's quake was the biggest many long-term residents had felt, he said. A staff member at the Lae International Hotel said televisions were damaged after falling onto the floor in guests' rooms. The US Geological Survey put the quake at 6.7 magnitude - not powerful enough to generate a tsunami - and 78km deep with its epicentre around 100km north of Lae.
How To Marry A Millionaire — Really
There are more millionaires than ever, and no shortage of people who want to share their success. But one event in Manhattan last week turned the old idea of a gold digger on its head. "We are hosting a speed date exclusively available to ultra-wealthy women and hot young men," said event organizer Jeremy Abelson. One female in attendance, Gail Garrison, said she is a 44-year-old fashion designer. Another said: "My name is Vivian Cha. I'm 47 years old. And I'm a physician." Nancy Richards said: "I'm 50 years old. But my motto is '50 is the new 30.'" "I'm open to dating men that are younger, whether it's five years, ten years, 12 years," Garrison said. What did one of the younger men there have to say? Paul Janka, 27, said: "I want to be coddled, yes." "There are a lot of people who are gonna say, 'That's disgusting.' Anytime you integrate money into dating, people are going to say, 'That's disgusting.' And it's usually by people who don't have any money," Abelson said.
Bill Gates Joins The Growing Social Network Exodus
People may get tired of social networking sites, but no one is going back to static webpages. The point isn't about which is the social network du jour, it's the ability to offer users a way to personalize websites and modularize them to their needs, as well as making inter-saite communication with not just friends, but people with similar tastes and interests. Social network sites iwth no focus other than just sharing pictures and blogs will be assimilated into sites with an actual demographic. For example, video game sites already incorporate social networking aspects in order to create a community of people that share a passion for something, and provide a means in which people can share those experiences (and that is the *true* power of social networking). Also, your bit on Gates' leaving Facebook is a bit misleading, suggesting that he is leaving the site because he lost faith in the idea of social networking when, in fact, it was because it was bringing too much attention on him (it's his business whether or not he wants to be popular); it had nothing to do with his opinion of the strength of social networks.
Harkleroad gets back on radar screen
Five years ago, Ashley Harkleroad captured Charleston as few tennis players have. Little known, and just 17 years old at the time, Harkleroad was the belle of the Family Circle Cup until the Saturday semifinals. She was perky, pretty and a delight to watch. But for most of the time since then, the girl affectionately known as Pebbles from her days of living in little Flintstone, Ga., has been in a different zone. Then a couple of weeks ago, newspapers around the world flashed photos of Harkleroad. The 5-5 blonde practically carried the U.S. Fed Cup team on her back against Germany, while Lindsay Davenport's highly acclaimed comeback faltered. Davenport fell to 129th-ranked Sabine Lisicki the first day, but Harkleroad won both of her singles matches in the competition in straight sets to spearhead the win over Germany.

Police said the accident occurred about 6.15pm (AEDT) today at the intersection of Hill Road and Pondage Link, at Homebush Bay. "The male driver of the small sedan, a holder of a provisional licence, was treated in the vehicle before being taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries." Police said there were about 20 passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, but only three were taken to hospital for treatment of "minor soft tissue injuries". A female passenger in the car also had minor injuries. Police said their investigation into the crash was continuing. Share this article .
A campus subdued by chill of shock, fear
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The flip-flops and backpacks were gone, replaced by black boots and assault rifles. The lone figures crossing the Drillfield in the center of Virginia Tech's campus, which is usually alive on a late-semester Monday, mostly shuffled past with quick glances at the police cars and trucks, all of them flickering blue and red. At least for a day, the deadly killing rampage did more than create a sprawling, cross-campus crime scene. It drained the energy out of the mountain university, leaving its students shocked and tired, whispering about near-misses and wondering what could possibly be next. "It's never been this quiet," said Safal Bhattarai, a 20-year-old marketing student who was carrying food from a dining hall guarded by police and dogs.
