Rudd names new front bench
I look around this room and see so many faces with whom I have fought in the trenches this last year. It is such a delight to see each and every one of you here and I salute the efforts which you have made." MPs were tightlipped this morning as they arrived for the meeting at Parliament House in Canberra. Senior Labor MP Simon Crean was linked with the foreign ministry over Robert McClelland, who has been the party's foreign affairs spokesman in opposition. Bob McMullan has also been named in connection to the portfolio. Later today, the Liberal party room will meet to elect a new leader. Malcolm Turnbull is the favourite to win the post over Brendan Nelson. In Mr Rudd's home state, the Liberals continue to struggle. The Queensland Liberal Leader, Dr Bruce Flegg, has announced this morning that he will resign if his main challenger for the job agrees to withdraw from contention too.
Road reopened after snow rescue
The A66 in County Durham has reopened after heavy snow trapped 200 drivers and passengers who had to be rescued. Many were forced to abandon their vehicles on the transpennine route and spend the night in pubs and hotels. A coach party of 40 pensioners and a party of 15 children were among those taken to safety on Friday. A Durham Police spokesman said all vehicles had now been removed and that drivers were not to blame, as the snow had been "unexpectedly heavy". A Durham Police spokeswoman said: "Snow ploughs have been working continuously on the road and the vast majority of the 130 vehicles originally stranded have now been removed. "The people who were taken to the reception centre at the village hall and local pub, aided by police and mountain rescue volunteers, have either been able to leave the area in their vehicles or are staying in bed and breakfast accommodation." About 25 lorries remained on the A66 late on Friday night, but all private motorists had been evacuated, according to the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue Team.
Massive internet switchover begins
The internet passes a major milestone today in a transition designed to stop it running out of addresses. Hoever, one service provider warned that the industry needs to do more to avoid big problems in two to three years. Most of the web uses version 4 of the Internet Protocol (IPv4), dating from 1981 when the system was much smaller. This uses 32-bit addressing, allowing for some four billion unique numbers, which with the proliferation of devices including IP-enabled phones is no longer enough. A new version, IPv6, is being phased in that uses 128-bit addressing to give a barely imaginable number of addresses - 50 billion, billion, billion for every person on the planet today. So many that each of us could (indeed may) be given a personal address space larger than that of the current internet to provide a new fast way to access resources.
Underdog Skelton to face fuming Chagaev
Skelton's last fight was a decision against Michael Sprott in July, which earned him the title shot. Chagaev easily stopped Sprott in eight rounds in 2006, which Skelton's manager Frank Warren said has led the Uzbek camp to underestimate their opponent. "I think Chagaev has made a big mistake because he saw Skelton's fight with Sprott and decided to go for it," Warren told the London Times. Chagaev's trainer, Michael Timm, said they take Skelton seriously, and brought in big aggressive sparring partners to imitate the Briton's style. "Matt Skelton is a strong man who has a good punch," Timm said. "He's certainly not coming to Duesseldorf to collect a bouquet of flowers and a paycheck." This story has been viewed 393 times. .
Hubbard love
Fine, I countered, but for your part, be prepared to answer the complaints that have been levelled against the church over the years: of criminality, of avarice, of hypocrisy, of unwarranted hostility towards those who leave the church or attack it. No problem, they said. Come at 11am. So here I am outside. It's five minutes before the hour and my mind is open, my scepticism is in neutral and I'm as prepared as you can be for a Damascene conversion. My tour begins with a series of audio-visual presentations promoting the church's secular activities, primarily Narconon and Criminon (drug and criminal rehabilitation programmes) and Applied Scholastics (an educational skills set based on lectures delivered by Hubbard at Saint Hill in 1964). Anyone can come in and watch these presentations, though nobody else does when I'm there.
Alicia Keys - 'Like You'll Never See Me Again'
And if anything, it's probably just laziness on the part of whichever artist directors were responsible for their album cover shoots. Maybe even the same person did both. In which case never mind, eh? I realise that opening paragraph was rambling, but in my defence, I find it a struggle to find anything all that interesting to say about Alicia Keys or her music. I've never been that convinced by her. Obviously I believe that she exists, but I've never been sold on her as a concept. For all the fanfare and flag-waving, I tend to find her songs a little on the hollow side - dressed up nice and pretty, but with next to nothing on the inside - and this one really hasn't made me think otherwise. She has a knack of crafting a very pleasant sounding melody, don't get me wrong - the backing here is an acoustic waterwheel that trickles gently and inoffensively through your head.
McCain and Romney spar over Michigan economy
I have always admired your family and the things they stood for. I was in college when that fatal day came and we no longer had our inspiration, your brother. I am disappointed in who you are endorsing. To think about all the times that the Clintons were here for you, and now you just put them aside. I think about it, and I thougt you were above the good old boys. Not so sure about that now. Hillary, a women. Maybe that just does not sit well with you Kennedys. I just don't understand. She is a great lady that certainly helped your party out by staying with Bill. The party owes her more than a senate seat. She should have all of you out there shouting her attributes. It was alright for Bill to be used to get votes for our new governor. He also has a short memory. I will have a hard time voting for either one of you because of this.
August 2006 Archives
While Nick Lachey was off buying a basketball team (go, Hollywood Fame!), Vanessa Minnillo was working it at the Emmy Awards on Sunday. Here are some photos of her on the red carpet. I bet she's thrilled to be dating Nick. The interest level in her is higher than ever. Last year at the same event it was all: Vanessa Who? Oh, that chick from MTV? Bet she's counting her blessings. .
