Phillies - Admiration is mutual for Mike Schmidt, new Phillies third ...

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Truth be told, Pedro Feliz didn't recognize the sandy-haired man when he approached him earlier this week. But after he introduced himself - Pedro, Mike Schmidt; Mike Schmidt, Pedro - he was more than willing to listen.

"From the best, you are always going to get something," said Feliz, the Phillies' new third baseman.

What Feliz got was a ringing endorsement from the greatest player ever to play his position. Schmidt, in town for his annual 2-week instructional stint, said he has always been impressed with the way Feliz plays, dating back to the San Francisco Giants games Schmidt would catch on national television during Barry Bonds' heyday.

"[He has] tremendously impressive hands - wow," said Schmidt, the Phillies' all-time leader in career home runs (548), RBI (1,595), walks (1,507) and runs (1,506).

Wisconsin Sports Spectacular

I was watching the Skier-X competition where like 5 skiers race down this hill with apparently no rules. They were shoving each other, flying over jumps and wiping out. And the wipe outs...Oh...My...Gosh! I saw 4 races and 3 of them had people who crashed. One had a really bad one where I seriously hope that the two guys who got the brunt of it are okay. They were bumping going into this jump and before you know it, both of them are flailing in mid air trying to get the center of gravity right before they hit to no avail. It looked horrible. Not to mention the guys going into the fence. The commentators were calling it a "net". Around here, we call it a snow fence, it's a regular sight along the landscape in these parts. The other event I absolutely have to see is the smowmobile freestyle. Talk about messed up in the head! These guys take a snowmobile, jump and do flips and what not while flying through the air.

Cozy spots for lovebirds to nest a while

Surprise, sweethearts. It's Valentine's Day. Did it sneak up on you? I figured. Didn't make reservations for an overpriced, uninspired, premade five-course dinner? Do you actually enjoy hearing your partner speak in a crowded establishment? Well, you're in luck.

You can still make an evening of it. Create the meal of your life at home, then head out to one of the spots below, where you can sip libations in dark corners and maybe steal a smooch or six without breaking the bank.

2008 Harley-Davidson FXSTSSE2 Screaming Eagle Softail Springer

Exhaust exits from the right side via staggered over/under slash-cut pipes, emitting a traditional, throaty Harley rumble that's a little more pronounced than a stock bike.

The Springer front suspension lends an old school flavor to this limited edition Softail, but it is not uncomfortable - just different. To be honest, it doesn't deliver as cushy a ride up front as inverted telescopic forks, but conversely, they don't look as cool either. A traditional swing arm takes care of the rear suspension duties. Rolling stock consists of Harley-Davidson Dunlop rubber mounted on chrome Revolver 10-spoke cast aluminum profile wheels fore and aft. The front wheel is an 18-incher, while the rear sports a 17-inch wheel.

The five-gallon fuel tank is topped by a chrome instrument panel with the speedometer centered at the top, preceded by a freestanding tachometer mounted on the bars.

How small shops can compete with big ones

Bender urges all restaurant owners to consider focus on catering to all needs for their guests. That's something the major chains do well.

"I go to Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500) anywhere from five to seven times a week and if I know I won't be able to leave at lunch time, I'll pick up water and a sandwich," he says. He suggests expanding the caf's menu so it has something for everyone.

When to hire a pro

Strengthening a business owner's education in managing a restaurant can be a challenge when the focus is on running the business. However, a food consultant can help. Find one at the Foodservice Consultants Society International, which has 1,400 members in more than 43 countries worldwide.

"If you have new competition or if you aren't increasing sales or guest counts and aren't as profitable as you once were, it's a good time to call a consultant," says Bender, a member of FCSI and the California Restaurant Association

Good consulting help doesn't have to cost six figures: "A quick retainer can get you on the right track," he noted.

Mainstream Brands and Green Marketing Experts Engage Audience With ...

The event was held November 29-30, 2007 at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Joel Makower, chairman/executive editor of Greener World Media and winner of this year's "You Take the Cake" award for best speaker states, "Good And Green gave me the opportunity to present to an audience of top leaders of the green marketing industry. The important connections I was able to make as a presenter and the insights I gained from the other speakers and sponsors will prove to be invaluable as I begin to implement my 2008 business strategies."

In addition to Makower, green marketing strategists such as Green To Gold author Dan Esty, Steve French of The Natural Marketing Institute and Deborah Jones Barrow of TheDailyGreen.com shared the stage with mainstream brands such as Bank of America, Nike, Shaw Industries, Steelcase, Nau, Esurance, Silk(R) Soymilk, Virgin America and Method.

Pushing your way into an office romance is a really bad idea

We've done the happy hour thing with the group from the office as well as lunches with the same gang. He is kind of shy, though, and I think he needs a little push. I think he's the kind of guy that needs the woman to be the assertive one and invite him out.

With V day approaching, I thought it would be cute to send him a small balloon and flower arrangement to the office with a card inviting him to dinner from "Daisy" (that's the nickname he calls me because I have daisy stickers on my computer and car). I am writing you and asking your opinion because one of my friends thought it was a great idea, and the other said it was a really bad idea. Your thoughts?

"Daisy"

Dear Daisy:

Apparently you and girlfriend No. 1 have never read one word I've written about office romance.

Reliance and Cap Gemini. Huh?

The latest rumour about Reliance Communications bidding for Cap Gemini has people scratching their heads. Reliance Communications, headed by Anil Ambani, does media and telecom. Cap Gemini does software and tech outsourcing as also tech and business consulting. There's no synergy between the two. But it suits both companies to be in the news. Cap Gemini is the least high profile among the top tech Western firms, way, way behind IBM, Accenture, EDS and CSC. It has operations in India, but without the heft of its larger peers. A couple of years ago, there were rumours that Indian tech giants Infosys, then Wipro, would bid for Cap Gemini, as it would be a perfect buyout candidate for Indian firms looking to go global. But nothing happened. The rumours kept resurfacing. Cap Gemini,it appears, is like one of those eligible singles, always being teamed up with various suitors in the gossip columns, but never an engagement announcement.

My view: End of angst-ridden, college admissions process nears for ...

I accepted the acronyms — SAT, ACT, FAFSA — and stowed them away, to be digested later.

Meanwhile, amid the haziness, something was taking form. From the recesses it rose, like an omnipresent friend that I could not shake. It was this figure — known to my friends and me simply as "college" — that would follow me through my final years of high school, that would come to haunt my every move.

The college admissions process is a vortex that engulfs the young adult and, to an extent, touches almost everyone involved in his or her life. In other words, no one escapes unscathed.

At 16, I already knew that parents and procrastination created a deadly combo. Now add 10 schools, 10 deadlines and over 10 essays to the mixture, and you have concocted a potentially lethal brew.

The process brings parents face to face with the nemesis they were born to slay.
