Colbert discusses the future of robot sex

The human dating pool may soon see an immense expansion, according to author David Levy. But it may not be with humans. Count Stephen Colbert skeptical.

On The Colbert Report, the controversial author of Love and Sex with Robots espoused his theory that humans will one day develop emotional attachments to robots.

"The most common reason I think at the beginning will be that there are millions of people out there in the world who for one reason or another can't establish normal relationships with humans," Levy said. "They're lonely, they're miserable, and robots, when they are sophisticated enough, will be an excellent alternative."

Colbert was interested in the type of person who might grow close to the new machines. "Are these people who can't establish a relationship with other human beings," he asked, "are they by any chance people who write about love and sex with robots?"

"No," Levy responded curtly.

Kicking over the ice cream bucket

I picked chocolate fudge, cookie dough and bits from crushed Heath Bars. My date had strawberries, vanilla cream and marshmallows. The smiling servers brandished ice cream scoops like scimitars. The flavors were mashed on a cold marble slab. Music from the Pixies bounced off walls covered in pale, yellow paint. It was my first date in college.

UW students and U-District residents have long regarded Mix Ice Cream Bar, known locally as “The Mix," as a neighborhood icon. It has humored freshman dating dramas, late night partygoers and sweet-toothed ice cream addicts looking for their banana split fix. I chose it for my date because I had read that girls like chocolate. I like ice cream. The Mix had both, plus a bathroom rife with potty humor and Day-Glo graffiti.

Minutes after ordering, our confections were ready.

The European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that only the tasty, crumbly cheese that has been made for some 800 years near the Italian city of Parma can legally be called Parmesan.

In a case dating back to 2003, the court criticized Germany for allowing sales of imitation Parmesan in violation of European Union food origin rules that reserve the name Parmesan for Italian cheese only.

Okay, and apparently I've been taken in by an urban legend about the law stating that nothing distilled outside of Kentucky can be called "Bourbon."

Diamond Mogul Receives Angry Valentine

JDate users scouring the Jewish dating Web site in anticipation of Valentine's Day may have found a surprising match.

Lev Leviev, the controversial Israeli diamond mogul, had appeared to register a profile on the site, including such information as, “in my free time, I enjoy: Exploitation, Profiteering, Union-Busting, and Macrame."

The JDate profile was one of several recent Valentine's Day-themed acts of protest directed at Leviev, who in reality is not looking for love online but is a married father of nine and an active member of the Chabad-Lubavitch sect of Orthodox Judaism. His detractors oppose his use of diamond mines in Angola and what they say is his extensive involvement in housing construction for Jewish settlers on the West Bank.

“Because a great deal of jewelry shopping goes on during the weekend before Valentine's Day, we thought it was appropriate to reach out to Valentine's Day shoppers and encourage them to stay away from Leviev's shop," said Issa Mikel, a human rights activist who works with Adalah-NY, a coalition of organizations strongly critical of Israeli policy.

Bears sign Rex Grossman for 1 year

A one-year deal for a starting quarterback in the NFL doesn't say I love you.

A one-year deal says we're dating, but we're not committed. It says it's almost closing time, and neither one of us wants to go home alone.

More than anything, the Bears agreeing with Rex Grossman on a one-year, stopgap contract Saturday said the team might consider itself closer to rebuilding than either general manager Jerry Angelo or coach Lovie Smith wanted to admit at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

SyFriday: Living Life Out In The Open

Every once in a while, I like to pop over to the Battlestar Wiki site to see how Joe Beaudoin and crew are doing. Not only is the Battlestar Wiki a great resource on everything you ever wanted to know about "Battlestar Galactica," but I've known Joe online here for many, many years, dating back to our days working in the Galactica Newsletter Network.

One of the neat things to read over at Battlestar Wiki is Joe's blog. Normally, I don't talk about what other sites -- especially those that some might consider competition -- is doing, but this was something I found interesting. Earlier this week, Joe shared a very detailed story about how Wikia offered him $2,500 to sell his site to them. .

Jesse Mccartney - Mccartney Denies Online Dating

LATEST: U.S. teen pop sensation JESSE MCCARTNEY has denied he is looking for love online - insisting he set up a profile on a dating site for a "joke". The 20-year-old told U.S. magazine In Touch Weekly he had signed up to Jewish dating site JDate.com - even though he isn't Jewish. MCCartney, who recently ended his romance with David Cassidy's daughter Katie, admits he did join the website - but only for amusement and not as a serious way to meet women. He tells America's Us Weekly, "I just wanted to set the record straight and let everyone know that the profile I created on JDate was a joke! "I was hanging' with some friends and we thought that it would be really funny to see peoples' reactions. The hilarity of it all is that until I announced having a profile on the site, nobody believed it was me.
